A cascading style sheet (CSS) is a Web page derived from multiple sources with a defined order of precedence where the definitions of any style element conflict. The Cascading Style Sheet, level 1 (CSS1) recommendation from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which is implemented in the latest versions of the Netscape and Microsoft Web browsers, specifies the possible style sheets or statements that may determine how a given element is presented in a Web page.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), is the recommended way to control the presentation layer in a web document. The main advantage of CSS over presentational HTML markup is that the styling can be kept entirely separate from the content.

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language used for describing the look and formatting of a document written in a markup language. While most often used to change the style of web pages and user interfaces written in HTML and XHTML, the language can be applied to any kind of XML document, including plain XML, SVG and XUL. Along with HTML and JavaScript, CSS is a cornerstone technology used by most websites to create visually engaging webpages, user interfaces for web applications, and user interfaces for many mobile applications. source article: wiki

CSS is an abbreviation for Cascading Style Sheets. Style sheets are simply text files (.css ), composed of lines of code that tell browsers how to display an HTML page. They give the designer more control over the appearance of a webpage by allowing to specifically define styles for elements, such as fonts, on the page. By using CSS one could separate HTML content from its appearance, distinguishing style from structure.

Seems like everyone writes the same answer, but CSS is used alongside HTML to customise the style and look of the HTML elements. Give it a Google.
